What You Must Know Regarding Glutathione
New studies demonstrate that glutathione is a key component to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Often called the “master antioxidant” by nutrition experts, this compound is central to the regulation of metabolism and body detoxification. This essay examines what antioxidants do in the body, what exactly makes glutathione special, and will provide information about how you can naturally supplement your glutathione levels.
Basic biology teaches us that oxygen is the key component to all animal life as it plays a central role in metabolic processes. Ironically, oxygen is also highly toxic and the by-products of the reactions it is responsible for can damage tissues in the body. These by-products are more commonly known as free radicals.
Because they are chemically unstable, free radicals can start reactions with whatever compounds they run into. The result of this instability is a disruption in normal cellular function, and eventual damage to the cell. Science has shown that free radicals are implicated in the disease processes associated with cancer and other illnesses.
As such, antioxidants are manufactured by the body as a defense against free radicals. Antioxidants come in two verities, those that dissolve in water and those that dissolve in fatty acids. The first type of antioxidant is generally found in blood plasma as well as inside cells, whereas the second type of antioxidant is associated with cell membranes. These antioxidants function by stopping the formation of free radicals or by binding to them and rendering them inoperative.
While vitamins C and E are probably among the best known antioxidants, recent research has pointed the importance of glutathione. What makes glutathione special is that it is produced naturally by the body and it is found directly inside cell, where it can do the most good. Glutathione is also found in particularly high concentrations in the liver and seems to be involved in helping the liver processes and remove various types of toxins from the body.
Scientists still don’t know exactly what the connection between glutathione and disease is, but research does demonstrate that those ill with AIDS, cancer, and other serious diseases have very low glutathione levels. Furthermore, a recent study demonstrated that when women being given chemo for ovarian cancer also received glutathione injections, they had a better overall survival rate. This seems to suggest that glutathione is essentially to remaining healthy.
As such, many people are now looking for ways to supplement their levels of glutathione. While supplements in pill form do not seem to work as glutathione is not well processed by the digestive system, there are other ways to boost the levels of this antioxidant in your body. The most effective way seems to be to ingest the precursors (or elements that make up) glutathione. These are cystein glutamic acid, and glycene.
Glycene, cystein, and glutamic acid are easy to add to your diet. Just increase your consumption of lean animal proteins and leafy, green vegetables. Various pills also are available which contain these substances. Injectable glutathione also exists, but should only be administered by a doctor or certified health professional. Some researchers are trying to develop different delivery methods for this powerful antioxidant, but these are still a long way off.
