What Causes Shingles To Develop
Many adults contract a condition known as shingles which is actually very common. In some instances the symptoms can be quite mild but at other times they can be quite severe. A minority of people will suffer with complaints for the rest of their lives because of acquiring shingles in adulthood. So that you can have a better understanding of the condition, we will have a look at the many causes of shingles.
Why Do People Get Shingles?
The herpes varicella zoster virus is what causes shingles and it is the same virus which causes children to contract the chicken pox. Chicken pox is normally only picked up when we are children, but adults are always at risk of developing shingles. Those of us who have had chicken pox will have the virus dormant in our system. But in later life the virus can become reactivated and that is when the symptoms of shingles develop. When the immune system is low, we are at most risk of the disease developing.
Because shingles affects the nerve endings it can really be a painful disease to cope with. For a small minority of people, the pain related to shingles lasts for many years and can be very difficult to live with.
How To Tell If You Have Shingles.
When the first symptoms of shingles appear, you could be mistaken for thinking that you have the flu but you will then notice redness and swelling on the skin. Small blisters usually follow and they are very similar to the blisters which develop with chicken pox. After that people can get periods of intense pain and itching.
If you think that you may have shingles then it is important that you see a doctor quickly. Most regular pain medication won’t be good enough to help with the pain and the doctor will likely need to prescribe something for this.
There are, obviously, many illnesses that can afflict a person, but one of the most unpleasant is shingles. This illness is definitely not a pleasant one to get, so it pays to find out all you can about shingles symptoms. For those people unfortunate enough to get the illness, they will have to start looking for ways of treating shingles.
