The Way To Become An OB GYN

Both OB and GYNs are doctors that specialize in treating women. An obstetrician deals specifically with all aspects of pregnancies. This includes before a woman becomes pregnant, the nine months of pregnancy and the months following delivery. A gynecologist deals with a woman’s reproductive system. When a doctor specializes as an OB GYN, he cares for women both medically and surgically.

Becoming an obstetrician/gynecologist requires extensive schooling. If a student knows he wants to become a doctor in high school, he needs to work hard and get the highest grades he possibly can. It is extremely important to learn how to study well. He should take as many science and mathematics courses as he possibly can.

The first step in becoming a doctor is a four year bachelor of science program. There is no specific major required for entrance to med school, but there are specific classes such as anatomy, physics, genetics, biology and chemistry that are required. Some med schools have other class requirements as well, and it would be good to know ahead of time what the med school you plan on applying to requires.

The majority of premed students major in physics, chemistry or biology. Some colleges have a pre-med major, but many do not. In reality the major itself is not as important as taking the classes that the med school requires for entrance.

It is very important for premed students to work hard and maintain a high grade point average. Nothing below a 3.5 will be acceptable, and a 3.7 or 3.8 is recommended. College for these students can be a stressful time.

Upon entering med school, the student embarks on another four years of schooling. Classroom studies take up the first two years. Students will spend most of their time with science classes such as anatomy, pathology and microbiology. The majority of the med students find these two years to be extremely difficult because of the amount of material that is covered.

The last two years are spent working in a hospital or a clinic. The third year is spent rotating through the different departments and getting the feel for each one. The fourth year is more of the same, and the student works at finding an area of specialization.

The final step is a four year residency. Although the student is a doctor after graduation from med school, he cannot practice without supervision until he has finished the four years of residency and passed a series of exams, allowing him to become licensed.

It is a long, hard road to become an Katy OB GYN. It is worth it all, though, when the student has his license in his hand. This career has a tremendous outlook in the coming years, and it is a very lucrative occupation.
