Vitamin C is instrumental in the formation of protein that reinforces structure to bones and cartilage, along with muscles and blood vessels. Vitamin C also helps with the absorption of iron. Research has shown that there is no real benefit to taking too much of the vitamin. Therefore, one should avoid overdoing things as they’ll simply be wasting both their time and money.
The most common symptoms of Vitamin C deficiency include lassitude, weakness, nosebleeds and even scurvy. Primary causes of this shortage is from poor nutrition and diet, homelessness and alcoholism. Otherwise, you should have a pretty easy time locating some of the many foods that offer great supplies of the nutrient itself.
Other factors can contribute to Vitamin C deficiency so pay close attention if you feel that you may not be getting enough of it yourself. Pregnant mothers who increase the amount of Vitamin C later in pregnancy will increase the chance of the baby developing wheezing when they approach two years of age.
Studies have also concluded that pregnant mothers should not take Vitamin C supplements and that they should eat a balanced diet to get the nutrients naturally. Another study concluded that infants taking supplements are at a greater risk of getting food allergies and asthma.
Iron deficiency anemia is also caused by Vitamin C deficiency. Anemia is when the body does not produce enough red blood cells in the bloodstream.
Initial sings and symptoms of this disease include things like fatigue, weakness and pallor. As the disease intensifies, more severe symptoms will emerge, including blood loss and dizziness.
Scurvy is another disease linked to Vitamin C deficiency. Symptoms will include weakness, poor healing, aches and pains along with irritability. Also look out for purple and swollen gums that are prone to bleeding.
A balanced and nutritious diet, including maintaining proper levels of Vitamin C is the most medically prudent way to avoid these diseases, and to protect against others.
