When it comes to actual selection of the homeopathic software, beside homeopathic repertories, materia medicae are considered one of their most important parts. The usual marketing hype aimed at impressing a potential user revolves mainly around the figures – number of books, number of pages, number of authors etc. While the numbers are something that human mind can easily grasp, the conclusions (as to which homeopathic software is „better”) based on plain numbers are often misleading.

A sheer amount of text does not guarantee the quality and actual usability. Let’s illustrate the claim on a following example: a homeopathic software that includes 100 000 standard pages of materia medicae. If you imagine the amount, I believe it is safe to say that very few people, if any, will ever read through such a massive amount of text. Considering the fact that materia medicae are not exactly a light reading, we can safely assume you will be able to utilize only a very small fraction of what that particular homeopathic software offers. What about the rest? Do you really need so many books?

Obviously, if you cannot normally use such an amount of information, you should either be looking for ways that allow you to do so, or drop the idea completely and focus only on the most relevant titles.

This is the point when selecting a homeopathic software with the sensible implementation of materia medica can make all the difference. If you decide to go for the large amounts of books, you should make sure your homeopathic software provides search functions powerful enough to be usable in a day-to-day homeopathic practice and that it compensates for some crucial drawbacks many materia medicae have.

Here are some questions to ask your homeopathic software vendor:

Is it possible to effectively search through the materia medicae?Does your homeopathic software allow searching for the occurrence of several terms in a text, paragraph, sentence? Is it possible to link the search results to specific remedies or do I have to find that information manually by reading the headings of the chapters?Have your materia medicae typos corrected (a BIG problem with many materia medicae) or is this problem otherwise addressed in your homeopathic software?Does your homeopathic software utilize synonyms and compensate for the archaic terms used in older materia medicae?

Beside the muscly search engine in your homeopathic software, you can also try to solve the problem of large amount of text by selecting works containing condensed information from various sources, such as titles by Frans Vermeulen. For instance, his Concordant materia medica, which is basically a compilation, contains all the unique information from ten older homeopathic authors, compensated for redundant information and various types of errors. This reduces the size, while maintaining the amount of useful information.

If you pay at least some attention to the mentioned points, you should be able to avoid purchasing a homeopathic software that includes many materia medicae in a form that you absolutely cannot utilize.

While homeopathy had been around for more than 200 years, a serious use of homeopathic software is a question of the last 20 years at maximum. Despite the massive advantages of using the homeopathic software, there is still a great number of homeopathic practitioners who don’t feel the need to invest their time and money into such kind of fancy.

The difference in practicing homeopathy in the modern days and a hundred years ago might not be obvious at first. Why should anyone waste their time learning to use a homeopathic software, if our predecessors could easily do without it? Or could they?

If you think about the invention of homeopathic repertory (such as Kent’s repertory, to name the most famous one, although it was not the first), you can clearly see the incentive to organize the growing amount of information, which was quickly outgrowing the limits of human capacity. Since they did not have computers at the time, the information was organized into rubrics and corresponding remedies and published as a book, which was a fantastic thing to do, because it greatly enhanced and simplified the tedious process of finding the matching remedy for the patient’s symptoms.

With repertories around, the life got easier for homeopaths, but still far from easy. Even with a repertory, the practitioner still needed to spend quite bit of time learning the structure of rubrics. Since repertory is basically a database of rubrics linked to remedies, its implementation in homeopathic software is pretty straightforward, with one essential difference – in homeopathic software, you DON’T need to learn the structure of the repertory before you can use it. With powerful search functions available in homeopathic softwares, you can start using ANY repertory right now!

With the ability to locate the matching rubrics quickly and easily (good homeopathic software should also implement the use of synonyms and cross-references), you can make your evaluation in a time span of several minutes, which leaves you a plenty of time to study the case using several approaches, peek into materia medica for confirmation etc. If you would have to do the same manually (without any homeopathic software), it would take you several hours to do it properly and that’s why very few practitioners do it. Experienced homeopaths who do not use any homeopathic software prescribe on keynotes or key symptoms for each remedy. But imagine this – even if you knew a hundred keynotes for hundred remedies (I am quite confident they usually know no more than twenty per remedy), you are still hopelessly far to encompass tens of thousands of symptoms available in modern repertories.

The conclusion is obvious: if a homeopathic practitioner does not use any homeopathic software, even with a phenomenal memory, they are putting the largest part of homeopathic knowledge away and utilizing just that tiny fraction they can master. What a waste. With widespread use of many suppressing drugs pharmaceutical industry produces, the cure is more difficult to achieve than it was a hundred years ago. It is therefore even more essential to base our prescriptions on solid foundations and without limitations of oversimplification required by non-computerized approach.

Homeopathic software of the future

Article by Peter Bezemek

At the time of writing, homeopathic software is ideally being used as a tool for rapid access to homeopathic repertories and materia medicae, and an evaluation of the data gathered, primarily based on various statistical methods. During the 200+ years of the existence of homeopathy, a substantial amount of data has been gathered and homeopathic software makes this information more accessible, allowing better integration into homeopathic practice.

However, there is still a substantial space for improvement. While homeopathic software simplifies and enhances the efficiency of many otherwise tedious processes, the final interpretation of data relies, for the greatest part, on the homeopathic practitioner. Such interpretation is very ambiguous, ranging from very analytical one, based solely on provings and materia medicae information, through a more relaxed one based on keynotes, ending with a purely intuitive type of prescribing. During the interpretation process, an experienced homeopath considers not only the information alone, but also connections and associations between them, and their level of relevance to the case concerned.

The point is, this interpretation and analysis COULD be performed by a homeopathic software. As inconceivable as it may first sound, it could also be much more efficient than any human and also much more objective and justifiable.

To make this possible, the information cannot be stored as a text, as is the case nowadays, but rather as a semantic web of meanings (an ontology), thus making homeopathic software “aware” of the relationships between the objects and processes. To allow for this to happen, we can consider two layers of information.

The first layer could be a general ontology of terms, or a specifically designed homeopathy-related ontology that would store the relationships and associations between objects. For example, the general layer would provide information such as “head is a part of the body”, “face is part of the head”, “head is an external part of the body”, “liver is an internal part of the body” etc. By establishing a multitude of such associations, this layer will allow homeopathic software to reason about the general connections and relationships between the objects.

The second layer would be a pathological layer, presenting observed symptoms and pathological states as recorded in provings, homeopathic materia medicae and repertories, while linking them to specific remedies. For example, we could record symptoms of “palpitation in the eyelids”, “protruding abdomen”, “thin legs” and link it with the remedy Ammonium Muriaticum.

In case a homeopath will encounter a person who experiences “throbbing in the local parts”, has a “corpulent appearance”, but “thin lower limbs”, homeopathic software will be able to identify these symptoms as belonging to Ammonium Muriaticum. Although the wording and also the exact meaning is different, based on the information and relationships stored in the general and symptomatic layers, homeopathic software will be able to consider them a sufficient match.

This example demonstrates only a basic outline as to what such homeopathic software could achieve in practice. If you ponder upon this idea, you shall find out the possibilities of such system are nothing short of staggering.

The creation of such homeopathic software system, however, would require a tremendous amount of time and expertise, and only time will show if homeopathic community is prepared to support such a novel idea.

The Advantages of Using Homeopathic Software in Homeopathic Practice ? Part IV

When it comes to actual selection of the homeopathic software, beside homeopathic repertories, materia medicae are considered one of their most important parts. The usual marketing hype aimed at impressing a potential user revolves mainly around the figures – number of books, number of pages, number of authors etc. While the numbers are something that human mind can easily grasp, the conclusions (as to which homeopathic software is „better“) based on plain numbers are often misleading.

Is it possible to effectively search through the materia medicae?

Does your homeopathic software allow searching for the occurrence of several terms in a text, paragraph, sentence?

Is it possible to link the search results to specific remedies or do I have to find that information manually by reading the headings of the chapters?

Have your materia medicae typos corrected (a BIG problem with many materia medicae) or is this problem otherwise addressed in your homeopathic software?

Does your homeopathic software utilize synonyms and compensate for the archaic terms used in older materia medicae?

The advantages of using homeopathic software in homeopathic practice – Part III

Now let’s talk about the type of books you want and don’t want to have in a homeopathic software. In homeopathy, we have three main categories of books – repertories, materia medicae and books on homeopathic philosophy. Which ones do you need to have in your homeopathic software?

The answer depends on how you plan to use the homeopathic software. While it is clearly advantageous to include repertories in a homeopathic software (as presented in Part I), the situation is less obvious in case of materia medicae and books on homeopathic philosophy. Let’s take it step by step.

Typical materia medica includes some kind of foreword, followed by chapters describing the homeopathic picture of selected homeopathic remedy. For example, you have a chapter on Aconitum Napellus, followed by a chapter on Agaricus Muscarius etc. This typical structuring can be utilized by a homeopathic software and allow linking the chapters to specific remedy and provide a smooth interaction with the repertories.

This, however, assumes a common table of remedy names, on the side of homeopathic software, to which all repertories and materia medicae are linked. While this may come as natural, it is in fact very rarely the case. There are great discrepancies in remedy naming throughout the homeopathic literature and it takes a great deal of work to resolve all the naming problems, sometimes it’s even impossible. For example, some authors describe the remedy „Agaricus” and they mean „Agaricus Muscarius”, although the name „Agaricus” only denotes a genus involving many other mushrooms. Only by comparing the symptoms can we know with confidence that the author means Agaricus Muscarius. In case of other remedies, the situation is even more complicated. For example, for most older authors, Ferrum Metallicum contains information belonging to Ferrum Aceticum, Ferrum Carbonicum and Ferrum Metallicum. The homeopathic software has to deal with all these intricacies and you should specifically ask about this point when deciding what homeopathic software to choose.

When all this is resolved in a satisfactory manner, the homeopathic software should then allow you to define search commands that will browse through the text of materia medicae and present the parts that match your search query. It is important to make sure the homeopathic software of your choice provides effective searching mechanisms for materia medica. For difficult cases, the required information is often found in some forgotten materia medica, rather than in a repertory. It’s essential to keep in mind that even the modern repertories do not incorporate information from all the materia medica, not even all of the very old ones. Effective work with materia medica is therefore one of the essential functions of the homeopathic software.

The third category of books includes books on homeopathic philosophy. Since the study takes time and most people don’t like reading the text from the computer monitor, it is better to have these in physical format. By including such books, the homeopathic software vendor can claim a higher number of titles, but these do not necessarily mean a higher value in the actual process of remedy prescription.

In the next part, we shall talk more about the way materia medicae are included in homeopathic softwares.

The Advantages of Using Homeopathic Software in Homeopathic Practice
