I tore my ACL playing soccer nine months ago. I had ACL reconstruction surgery about one month after the injury as I was waiting for the swelling to go down. Returning to a full program of sporting activities (I am not a professional athlete) began with a return to cycling 6 weeks after surgery and gentle jogging a few months later. Being a keen skier and living in Colorado, the main aim for me was to be ready for the new ski season.

Published research has shown that ACL re-tears are 3 to 4 times more likely for skiers who opt not to wear a brace on their return to the slopes compared with those who do. I didn’t want to be on the wrong side of that statistic and so I began my search for a suitable ACL brace.

While waiting for ACL surgery I had worn a DonJoy TROM rehab brace so I knew DonJoy quite well and decided to start my search for a ski brace there. There are five main types of DonJoy brace designed to support the post-surgery patient return to their daily activities. The five DonJoy ACL brace types, in order of strength or degree of instability supported, are:

DonJoy Defiance (a custom made brace requiring prescription by a PT professional)

DonJoy Armor (a custom fit brace, i.e. off the shelf, designed for contact and extreme sports)

DonJoy 4TITUDE (the lowest profile brace)

DonJoy Legend (designed for use in water)

DonJoy Playmaker (a wraparound brace available in non-neoprene for those with neoprene allergies)

The fact the Armor is custom fit, i.e. I could specify my own requirements online, coupled with its suitability for extreme sports and that it is available in a short calf model to work with a ski boot led to to concentrate on this product. Retailing at $499 from The Brace Shop, the DonJoy Ski Armor was the brace for me.

Choosing the right size was the first challenge. The Brace Shop did have a sizing chart on its website but what do you do if your calf, knee and thigh are all in different size brackets? It is slightly disappointing that in spending $500 or so there’s a compromise to be made even before you take delivery. Fortunately, The Brace Shop has Live Chat on their site so I was able to get some help (the knee is obviously the key measure to work from) and I placed my online order for the brace.

My DonJoy Ski Armor arrived after a week or so. On first inspection it seems nice and light with the appearance of being sturdy enough to endure the buffeting of a mogul run. The instruction manual was disappointing in that it was printed in a really small font with diagrams that were too small to be instructive. To be so dependent on a product as you hurtle down a mountain without the comfort of knowing how to fit the brace was a contradiction I wasn’t entirely comfortable with.

In reality I needn’t have worried. The brace fitted nice and easily with a resultant snug fit around my knee. It also has a nice low profile (bearing in mind that this is a mechanical brace with a hinge) and so fitted easily under my ski clothes. And so to the slopes of Eldora Ski Resort in Nederland, Colorado.

As any recovering ACL patient will know, rebuilding strength in the knee and surrounding muscles and ligaments is a long process. So to sit on the ski lift and merrily bend my knee and bring my leg to the straight position with the weight of a ski and boot was the first hint that the brace was going to work nicely.

In fact the day passed totally without incident to the point that I even forgot I was wearing the brace. Being so comfortable was down in no small part to the brace not moving on my knee. The snug fit remained in place all day.

Overall, I would highly recommend the DonJoy Ski Armor. It is comfortable, supportive, lightweight, low profile and enabled me to get back on the slopes without the fear of re-tearing my ACL. Marks out of 10? A strong 10 from me!

It is vital to grasp before hand, what specific type of knee brace you will need. If you purchase the wrong kind, it won’t fit properly, for your specific wishes. Your health practitioner is aware you need a brace and she is in the best position to tell you a way to go about finding, and ordering a knee brace.

I knew a buddy who’s had 2 total knee surgeries, and I’ll tell you, that many of the knee braces he picked out on his own, didn’t work as expected. He attempted fitting the knee braces on his very own and that was merely a waste of money. He would always find out, after taking the knee braces home, is it was either the incorrect size, or was to tight. He went through many knee braces before finding the best one,

While every individual situation is dissimilar, it is smart so think about this before making an attempt to fit one on your own. If all you have is a little tenderness round the knee area, you could be able to get, and fit one on your own. Their are stores that specifically specialize in helping you find, and fit the correct knee brace according to your special needs. When you finally find the right knee brace, ask them all about the way to fit it correctly. The box the knee brace comes in, will have instructions you can follow. I advise that you show the box, to whoever you bought it from, and ask them to clarify, why this knee brace will work the best.

It is just so true that, how you fit a knee brace goes hand in hand with where you get one. If you purchase one at stores, that have a tendency to have less expensive braces, chances are it will not fit correctly. It may slide down all the time, or it could be made with the type of material that doesn’t last. By buying one at your local drugstore, or ordering one from your physician or physical therapist, you may have an improved chance of having a better fit.

When a brace is fitted in the proper way, you ought to have no discomfort. Please read all instruction on the box for complete help guide. Your doctor, or therapist might have already shown you how to do it, now do it, remembering what was told to you, and doing it yourself. Practice is essential.

Simply go online, and do research, before just picking a place of convenience, that might lead you down many irritated roads. Fitting a knee brace properly is crucial. Selecting quality brand will help you, have a correct fit. Do your analysis, think about all your doctors recommendations, and enjoy feeling better with that perfect fit knee brace.

If you have got a knee injury you want support and stability for the knee. The knee is one part of the body that you can’t simply keep still when you go thru your day. In fact, when you have a knee injury you may suddenly have an appreciation for just how much we move our knees during the day. Even when we are sitting, our knee is working because some elements of the joint are engaged. Getting a knee brace custom fit to your knee can help you reduce agony and keep your knee as stable as possible while you make your way thru your day.

You can get a knee brace custom made just for your wishes, but in several cases you can choose a brace that is on the market that will allow you to customise certain sides of the fit. This is typically much more reasonable because instead of spending a few thousand bucks on getting a knee brace custom made one hundred pc you can spend about a hundred greenbacks and get something that will supply as much support as the model that was made for you, while also saving a great amount of cash in the procedure.

The DonJoy Defiance III is the hottest knee brace custom option on the market today. It is adjustable so it can be made to fit anyone. There are many pro athletes who wear the brace, even those who take part in water sports like surfing, wakeboarding, and swimming. If you’re recovering from an ACL or other knee ligament injury or surgery, this is a great brace for you to choose.

This brace is custom built primarily based on your precise measurements, that means the brace will fit perfectly to each contour of your body during movement and when you are not moving. There is a 4 point leverage dynamic system, a sophisticated hinge technology, and carbon fiber frame that may guarantee what the brace isn’t just fit to your specific measurements, but is also going to offer you the movement and comfort you need to wear the brace each day while you are getting over an injury or surgery for an injury.

In addition, this knee brace custom includes an anti-migration supra condyle pad, which may help the knee brace stay in place in any case of your level of activity, which is important because you wish to have the support you will need with every step. In addition, there are swiveling strap tabs, that may allow for the brace to move with you instead of slipping and sliding, which can cause pain and lower the amount of support that you get from a standard knee brace.
