Overcome Your Driving Phobia With These Smart Tips

Smash! After the crash, I slowly pulled the crumpled metal, and shredded tires, that used to be my car, over to the side of the road. I was trembling, and quivering. Even though I was physically okay, emotionally, I had acquired a phobia of driving.

In general, most people drive on a daily basis. We drive to visit friends, family, or to earn a living. We even drive short distances, in lieu of walking. If driving is one of your phobias, how can you overcome this? How can you get back on track, and join the daily rat race?

As isolated as you think you are, a phobia of driving isn’t unheard of. Too many people feel that they must hide that they suffer from this phobia. Once I’d recovered from my crash, I didn’t want to look at a vehicle. I’d walk, bus, or cycle, just to avoid driving.

My condition was most terrifying. If you don’t live in the city where you can walk most places, you might feel as though your world has become very, very, small.

First, give yourself permission to have a phobia of driving.  The fact that you have it is  very logical. Just think of it, you were trapped in a mesh of crumpled metal, after a high-impact crash. Now if that isn’t permission enough to have a phobia of driving, I don’t know what would be.

Before we take a hard look at your phobia of driving, lets figure out why you are suffering.

Maybe you are squeamish about the sound of the impact itself.

Could it be that you fear one slip of the pedal, and another crash will happen?

Maybe you feel overwhelmed by the signs, lights, and maze of speeding cars.

There are many things that can contribute to your phobia of driving. Find out the root causes. Mull over what happened to you, and try to come up with the why.

You probably won’t get near a vehicle, so how can you overcome this phobia of driving? Once you’ve uncovered the origins, try to counteract it by trying a new approach.

If the more complicated routes intimidate you, try mapping out an alternative, and less-traveled route. Think of it as a maze that you will need to navigate. Each leg of your journey is a milestone accomplishment. Ready, set, buckle-up, and off you go.

Don’t allow a fear of driving to dictate how you live your life. A simple change in attitude can get you back to driving a car in no time.
