Learn About Car Accident Injuries

Car accidents happen every day, some with no injuries at all, some with minor cuts, scrapes, bruises, and others with serious, even life-threatening injuries. The most familiar injury is whiplash, resulting in a stiff and sore neck. Treatment for car accident injuries are usually relatively simple and recovery quick and complete. Other head, neck and back injuries may also occur, along with internal trauma and various broken bones.

Whiplash is certainly the most frequent injury sustained in car crashes and while painful, is usually not serious and recovery generally occurs within days or weeks. Traumatic brain injury is significantly more serious and can lead to temporary or permanent impairment. Concussions, seizures, headache, dizziness, memory loss and depression are all associated with brain injury.

Back injuries occur frequently in car accidents and may involve muscle, nerves, ligaments or vertebral discs. In much the same way neck tissue is injured in whiplash, the soft tissue of the spinal area may be traumatized causing inflammation and pain. These injuries may require extensive treatment such as prescription medication, ongoing physical therapy or even surgery.

Internal injuries may also be the result of motor vehicle accidents. Fractured ribs are a very common injury and may result in punctured lungs or other organs. Tearing of the spleen is another very serious internal injury common in car accidents, and can result in lengthy hospital stays.

Broken limbs, both upper and lower body are commonplace in car accidents. These injuries usually require splinting or casts. However, in some cases, especially in severe hip, knee and shoulder injuries surgery may be necessary.

As noted above, there are many types of injuries that can occur because of a motor vehicle accident. While the majority are not serious, there are some car accident injuries that may be life threatening or even fatal. One should always take every precaution when involved in a car accident and seek medical attention, even if injuries are not readily apparent. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
