Like many disorders, panic attacks occur when completely normal and beneficial emotional responses go haywire. Panic in itself is not a bad thing. Panic is a pre programmed process built into our systems that allows us to deal effectively with extremely dangerous situations, like an attack from wild animal or a raging fire.

When the panic response is triggered, chemical changes take place in our bodies and our brains on a massive scale. Adrenalin, endorphins, and other compounds are poured into the blood stream. Working together, they cause the mind and body to work at peak effectiveness towards a single, immediate goal. To run away fast or fight hard.

Normal panic makes you stronger, faster, more alert and focused than you could ever be. Strong enough to potentially defeat your attacker or fast enough to escape the burning building before it collapses. But for many people, this panic reaction is triggered with nothing to react to. Nothing to fight, nothing to run away from. When this happens, the body and the brain gets overloaded and overstimulated. Most people experience this from time to time, usually after periods of prolonged stress. But if these symptoms are a regularly occurring part of your life, you may need to seek help.

Some people seem genetically predisposed to panic attacks. In other cases, severe or prolonged trauma or stress can cause this condition. Panic attacks are a recognized symptom of Post traumatic Stress Syndrome. Many drug therapies have been developed that can inhibit or derail the chemical chain reaction that causes a panic attack. These include antidepressants and other mood modifying compounds.

Most people experience this from time to time, usually after periods of prolonged stress. But if these symptoms are a regularly occurring part of your life, you may need to seek help. Whatever the solution you eventually use, it is important to seek help if you life seems to be out of control from frequent or prolonged panic attacks.
