Do Oh So Simple Diets Work For Fast Fat Loss
Last week I was reviewing yet another diet program that promised fast fat loss results. The diet itself was not so bad and I think it could help many people to lose weight. I was, however shocked at the amount of misinformation that the e-book contained. Some statements were over-simplifications that were misleading, but others were just incorrect.
Many diet programs seek to have an ‘angle’ or a new take on the issue of dieting. That’s all very well, and I do see the need to differentiate your diet program from the competition. But, when you are selling a diet program, there is a responsibility to re-check your facts and clarify any statements that could be misunderstood or taken out of context.
It is especially important in the weight loss industry that we don’t make broad statements that are not true in all cases, or strong declarations that are not fully in-context. Few things are truly simple to explain and so we should avoid the temptation to over-simplify the facts. As Albert Einstein said – “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler”
If the reader remembers only a little of your e-book or seminar, you can bet that it will be those half-truths or out-of-context quotes that will stick in their mind. The human mind attaches to such things much more readily than to long winded facts.
Here I will just cover a few of the program’s misleading statements. I don’t want to give away the program’s identity by being too specific.
1. High intensity exercise is a waste of time for fat loss. On the contrary, high intensity exercise is one of the best exercise methods for people trying to lose weight. Many people who attempt high intensity workouts only reach medium intensity levels. This so called fat-burning-zone, that was once so popular, is the worst type of exercise for keeping the fat off. So I will stress here that if you are going to do high intensity workouts, then make sure the intensity IS high enough. At the same time, I advise wearing a heart monitor during such workouts, and definitely seeking medical advice beforehand.
2. Walking is the best form of exercise to lose fat. Walking is good exercise, but I don’t think it qualifies as the best exercise. For some people walking is there only exercise option. I suggest that those people walk often to maximize the benefits. For more physically in-shape people, then I believe that high intensity workouts will achieve more fat loss and increased fitness. Walking is outside of the fat-burning-zone, so it is a good form of exercise, but I couldn’t say that is the best form.
3. Honey has no health benefits over white sugar. This is a prime example of where inaccuracies can create misinformation. It is possible that both sugar and honey are similar for calorific values. I haven’t verified that. If it is so, then there would be no significant weight loss benefits from switching to honey. But, as far as your health is concerned, I can’t see how a highly refined product such as white sugar, could be considered equal to something as natural as honey. And the programs suggestion to use artificial sweeteners is just utter nonsense.
There were numerous other inaccuracies and misinformation – too much to cover it all here. The key point is that the actual diet was quite sound and yet the accompanying e-book was so poor. Someone who followed this diet and lost weight may be misled into believing the e-book was equally as good as the diet.
Because such incorrect content is so prevalent, it makes sense to immunize yourself against the misinformation. The only sure way to do this is by learning the core principles of weight loss and nutrition. Once you are clear on the principles it becomes easy to spot the errors, and keep your own dieting efforts on the right track.
