Our bodies just need a small amount of salt for proper nutrition. But the truth is that we all, including our kids, consume far much more salt -or rather, the sodium – than we should.
Why should we care how much salt (sodium) our kids eat?
An excessive amount of salt (sodium) results in risk for high blood pressure and greater danger for heart attack. And, we ladies know salt’s effect on bloating!
The eating habits of our kids will carry on in their adulthood.
What’s the recommended daily intake of salt (sodium)?
The adult recommended daily intake of sodium in the U.S. is less than 2,400 mg. But, you might be interested to note that the daily recommendation in the UK is under 1,600 mg! That’s significant difference. It does not take much purchasing and looking at nutrition information on food to find that they carry a Whole lot of sodium. There are no intake recommendations for children, but I think that they are essential due to the development of eating behavior that I mentioned above.
So, what’s any person to do?
Of course, a person should follow the advice of his/her physician.
But, in my opinion – a healthy adult with excellent blood pressure – I just use my common sense to guide me.
Tips for easy, common sense salt reduction:
Use less salt than recommended in a recipe. I have in no way discovered it to affect the taste. A lot of the time, I completely leave it out – especially if it’s combined with a product that already contains salt/sodium.
Do not let your kids salt at the table. The only time salt is on my dinner table is when company is over.
Check the nutrition label of every food which you purchase. You’ll swiftly become aware of how much sodium is in cereal, bread, canned goods, bacon, frozen food, etc.
Purchase low-salt or low-sodium versions of an item. Why eat the extra salt when you’ll adjust to the difference in flavor (if any) in several bites?
Eat much more fresh fruits and vegetables.
Substitute sodium with other spices which will give food flavor without adding sodium
Forming good “salting” habits now, will make things a lot easier for your kids in the long term. Do it for them, and you will be doing it for you personally too!
