Chiropractic Therapy Serves As Pain Management For Mesothelioma

The American Chiropractic Association states that all chiropractic doctors “have a deep respect for the human body’s ability to heal itself without the use of surgery or medication. These doctors devote careful attention to the biomechanics, structure and function of the spine, its effects on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems, and the role played by the proper function of these systems in the preservation and restoration of health. A doctor of chiropractic is one who is involved in the treatment and prevention of disease, as well as the promotion of public health, and a wellness approach to patient healthcare.”

Proctored to help treat and prevent pain and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, chiropractic care focuses on the spine since it ultimately controls the bodies motions. Although viewed as an alternative form of medicine and treatment, chiropractic care is often wanted and will provide complementary treatment that coincides with other traditional medical treatments. Most cancer patients, and especially those who suffer from asbestos-related cancers like mesothelioma, make the decision to go see a chiropractor as part of their treatment plan.

A very uncommon and rather aggressive cancer, known as mesothelioma, can be caused by exposure to asbestos dust. Asbestos is an all natural mineral that was commonly used in the 20th century for many military and industrial applications. Mesothelioma is tricky and it can even take up to 50 years before symptoms are noticed. By then the cancer has typically become more advanced thus limiting the treatment options.

There were two published studies in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics that examined the cases of two cancer patients. The first case involved a 54-year-old man that was diagnosed with lung cancer, which is often associated with asbestos exposure. One year after surgery, the man experienced only miniscule pain relief and decided to visit a chiropractor. Upon his first visit the man had rapid pain relief and after just two visits he discontinued the use of his pain medications.

Mesothelioma patients interested in alternative treatment, who strongly believe in the body’s ability to heal itself, may find chiropractic care particularly appealing. Alleviating severe headaches and movement pains during cancer treatment may make the treatment process more comfortable for cancer patients
