Acupuncture Improves Depression in Pregnant Women

At a recent annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, The Pregnancy Meeting, presenters revealed the findings that show acupuncture may be an effective treatment for depression during pregnancy.

“Depression during pregnancy is an issue of concern because it has negative effects on the mother and the baby as well as the rest of the family,” said Dr. Schnyer, one of the study’s authors.

Even though depression in pregnant women occurs on the same level as it does among women of the same age who aren’t pregnant and women during the postpartum (after birth) period, fewer treatment studies have been conducted on pregnant depressed women.

The developing baby and mother are affected by anti-depressant treatment.

In the study, 150 participants who were diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder were randomly placed in either a group that received acupuncture specific treatment for depression , or one of two active controls: control acupuncture (they didn’t receive acupuncture specific treatment, but another form of acupuncture) or massage .

The mothers received 12 sessions during an eight week period. Junior acupuncturists unaware of the treatment group assignment needled participants at points prescribed by senior acupuncturists. The mother’s symptoms of depression were rated at the beginning, after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment.

The women receiving acupuncture specific treatment for depression experienced a significantly greater decline in the severity of depression compared to both control groups or the non-specific acupuncture group alone. They also had a higher response rate (63%) than the combined controls or control acupuncture alone. The reduction of symptoms and response rates between the control groups did not differ significantly.

Mild and temporary side effects were reported in 43 of the 150 participants (20 in the depression specific group, 19 in the non-specific group and 4 in the massage group). Notably fewer participants reported side effects in the massage group than in the two acupuncture groups.

“The results of our study show that the acupuncture protocol we tested could be a viable treatment option for depression during pregnancy” said Dr. Schnyer.

Did you know that women experience depression at a rate of 2:1 as compared to men? The reason for this, at least in part, is the large hormonal fluctuations women have throughout their lives. Men can become depressed, too, but it tends to look differently. Men usually become hostile and angry, not withdrawn and inward. They also are prone to avoiding treatment. Men commit suicide at a rate of 4:1 compared to women. The elderly also fall ill and often fail to get treatment. Well-meaning family members may think that the behavior of their elderly relative is just due to the aging process. This is not necessarily the case.

This is a real illness, not just a state of mind or something that someone can think themselves out of. There are several causes, including genetics, trauma history, physical illness (such as not making enough thyroid hormone), certain medications, chronic pain and grief.

In depression, neurotransmitters are ineffectively passing messages between neurons either because there are not enough neurotransmitters or they are too weak. This chemical malfunction in the brain is similar to talking on a cell phone with a poor connection. Treatment can help strengthen the connection.

If you or someone you know experience any of the symptoms for more than a two-week period of time, seek medical attention. Some of the symptoms of depression include lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities, isolation, difficulty concentrating or remembering, being irritable, feeling worthless and hopeless, gaining or losing more than 5% of your weight on a month, lack of energy, sleeping too much or having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, thinking about death and suicide, physical pain, digestive problems, headache and hurting all over.

Other forms of the disorder include postpartum and childhood depression, bipolar disorder and seasonal affective disorder. Postpartum depression can be confusing to new mothers because they feel that they should be happy for having a new baby. In reality, they feel horrible and like they are walking through sludge just to meet the needs of the baby. Children often show that they are depressed through behavior. It is very important to notice and act on any changes in the behavior of children. Children do not usually express how they are feeling verbally because they have not developed the vocabulary to do so. Bipolar disorder runs in families and has periods of elation and dark moods. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is caused by lack of exposure to sunlight. Most people with SAD live in the northern latitudes and experience it during the long, dark winters.

Light therapy is used to treat seasonal affective disorder. Cognitive therapy and medication have been found to be most successful at treating depression when used together. It is important to take care of your body – eat right, exercise, take time to play, particularly when you are starting to feel symptoms beginning. Stress management techniques, such as meditation have been shown to help ease symptoms of this illness.

Depression is not just a harmless illness. It can be fatal if left untreated. It is nothing to be ashamed of and it certainly is not your fault anymore than it is the fault of a diabetic for needing insulin. If someone you know or if you experience any of the symptoms of depression for two weeks, seek medical advice.

Depression is a real illness. It’s not just a state of mind or something that you can think yourself out of. If you want to know more about menopause and depression or healing anxiety and depression, visit our website for all the free resources you will need.

Understanding Alcohol Addiction

The meaning of alcohol addiction nowadays is usually a disease and addiction where the use of alcohol is continuing in spite of damaging health or interpersonal effects. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSMV) identifies alcoholism as continuing compulsive consumption of alcohol in spite of persistent adverse outcomes. The way the community perceives alcohol addiction differs. The medical community treats it as both a disease and an addiction.

Around 75% – 90% of adults in the USA are known to use alcohol but just a certain percent of these are troubled by alcohol dependency. There are a variety of factors that often come into consideration like stress, mental health, inherited genes, age, and ethnicity. Quite simply, there are many factors and they are not absolute predictors, just risk factors for the disease of alcoholism.

Studies indicate certain trends in the tendency to develop alcohol addiction associated with the age when drinking starts. Studies show that 40 percent of people who started out consuming alcohol prior to age 14 developed alcohol dependency whereas those that start after age 21 exhibited just a 10 percent rate of dependency on alcohol. Scientists think specific alterations within the brain of a teenager that are precipitated by alcohol can leave the individual at risk of alcoholism later on.

Inherited genes may impact a person’s susceptibility to alcoholism, because people that have a family history of alcohol addiction seem at greater danger.

The damaging affects of dependency on alcohol are slow-moving and it may be challenging for the affected individual or others to recognize them. Some of the signs and symptoms are:

* Constantly thinking about drinking

* Secretive drinking – hiding drinking alcohol so that others will not comment or notice

* Too much time spent in recovering from the consequences of alcohol consumption or with drinking related pursuits

* Long-term unsuccessful efforts to stop or cut down

* Loss of control – drinking more than intended

* Tolerance of alcohol where growing amounts are needed in order to feel it

* Persistent use despite harmful interpersonal, financial or wellness effects.

* Withdrawal signs and symptoms, which unlike withdrawal symptoms with other sorts of drugs might be lethal themselves.

Treatments for Alcohol Dependency

Close to 5 % of the alcoholics who attempt to quit drinking alcohol without support tend to be successful. Alcoholics that enter a treatment program statistically have a greater success rate. The majority of programs concentrate on complete abstinence and customization of problem management patterns and social connections as well as support. Specific medications may be used to assist the alcohol addiction treatment and life-style change.

A few approaches may well focus on alcohol reduction like Moderation Management and Drink Wise. Studies done in 2004 suggest that complete abstinence offers the best success in handling alcoholism long-term.

Though, women who are suffering with dependency on alcohol are fewer in number the health and social ramifications seem more noticeable. The way society as well as the alcoholics themselves look at their condition can inhibit or encourage seeking treatment.

Females are prone to believe suffering from dependency on alcohol is a sign they’re morally damaged or others will view them as being “bad”.

Males in contrast see surmounting the disease like a sign of power and a diagnosis of alcohol addiction isn’t seen as an indicator of weakness overall.

These are wide-ranging generalizations and they might not apply in each case yet may hinder or help in treatment respectively.

What is a panic attack? Basically a panic attack is when for some reason your body overreacts to a situation and goes into panic mode. Panic is a normal bodily response when put in a dangerous situation but with panic attacks they tend to happen when panic is really not needed.

When a person suffers from panic attacks they react in an irrational way to certain situations and this can be brought on by stress, depression and anxiety. Once a person has their first panic attacks then the simple fear of another attack is enough to cause further attacks.

Symptoms of panic attacks will also vary from person to person but generally include dizziness, a racing heartbeat, difficulty breathing, feeling cold or hot and more. You don’t need to continue to put up with panic attacks though as they are treatable and you can eliminate the condition for good.

Panic disorder is then when a person starts suffering from recurring panic attacks happening on a regular basis and really interrupting your life. When attacks start affecting your life to this extent then you have full blown panic disorder.

The treatment you may choose for your panic attacks might depend on your personal views and whether you prefer to use medication or a more natural approach. Some medications can help to a certain extent but will not get rid of the problem completely. Therapies have known to be quite successful in treating panic attacks and also some more natural treatments such as meditation and relaxation therapy can also be very effective.

Medications like Benzodiazepines, Xanax, Klonopin and Ativan are anti-anxiety medications which can help to reduce the symptoms of panic attacks as well as general anxiety which can help reduce panic. These medications can be quite addictive and should be used with caution and in accordance with your doctors instructions. Antidepressants can also be used to help with panic attacks by improving your general happiness which won’t eliminate panic attacks but can help reduce them and recude the severity of them.

Cognitive behavioral therapy tends to work really well in overcoming panic disorder. This is one of the most popular panic attacks treatment as it is often very successful in curing panic attacks permanently. This therapy works by finding the possible cause of your attacks and working through any issues that might exist. It also teaches you how to think differently about these issues and to learn to deal with situations in a much more positive and less fearful way. Retraining your mind to deal with things differently is a huge part of overcoming this disorder.

Another effective treatment is exposure therapy which involves confronting your fears and facing those situations that do bring on panic attacks. Although this can sound a bit scary, it is done at your own pace and only when you think you are ready. It can be done slowly over time and combined with cognitive behavioural therapy is extremely effective in overcoming panic disorder permanently.

Other alternative therapies like yoga, relaxation and meditation are also very effective in treating panic disorder as they help to calm and clear your mind. Reducing the stress in your life also goes a long way to a healthy mind.

It is recommended that if you use medication to help with your panic attacks symptoms that you should also combine it with some time of therapy treatment. Medication will only help with the symptoms but will not actually address the problem and so there is a good chance that if you stop taking the medications your attacks will return.

Bipolar Mood Disorder Reviews & Tips

Bipolar disorder is also known as BPD or perhaps known as manic depression and is a disorder that’s characterized by severe mood swings. Moodiness happens to all of us; however, a person that has bipolar disorder suffers from extremes of both major depression and extreme enjoyment as well as over optimism.

It is unsafe since the depression might be so severe these people are unable to function normally during those periods and think about or even act on suicidal thoughts. On the other hand, the energized mood (upswing) can lead to high risk conduct such as over spending, and actions they might not necessarily normally participate in.

Many persons with bipolar mood disorder may also enjoy times of normality between the mood swings where they function and feel much like everyone else. Certain people with BPD might experience mood swings often and of shorter duration and others could have lengthier durations of each mood.

BPD might begin as early as the teen years but diagnosis may be delayed as the mood swings could be ignored as being typical teen moodiness or even caused by ADHD. By the age of 25, the symptoms become more distinct and a diagnosis is made easier.

Complicating a proper diagnosis of BPD is that an individual may have mixed states and have symptoms of both depressive and manic states present at once.

The causes of BPD are unknown, some researchers suggest there could be a hereditary link however research results are not consistent. Even so, individuals that go on to have bipolar disorder may well show signs and symptoms in early childhood. According to some research the signs and symptoms are so subtle as to be easily wrongly recognized for standard conduct or even a different issue like hyperactivity.

Adults being affected by BPD can have problems in most areas of their life. The high periods cause these people to become overly upbeat, engage in risk taking behavior, as well as become financially foolhardy or sexually promiscuous. The complications could be endless.

During periods of depression, the individual struggling with BPD may not be in a position to function or to keep a job. Committing suicide is a danger also.

There’s quite a few medications that may be used to care for BPD. The explanation for that is that although some drugs work on some, other people show absolutely no indications of improvement.

Lithium is the only prescription medication proven to reduce the occurrence of committing suicide in despondent BPD patients. The drug Lamotrigine has been shown to be successful in protecting against depression symptoms in some bipolar sufferers. Antipsychotic drugs might be used to treat agitation of the BPD patient while in the manic phases.

When signs and symptoms are relieved and emotional swings are in remission the patient still must keep on taking the medicine or a relapse is likely. Certain patients with BPD describe the impact of the medication as leading them to feel dull or drugged. This complicates medication compliance among sufferers having BPD.

There are effective treatment options for persons with bipolar disorder and mood stabilizers can be a main portion of the treatment plan to help stabilize the person with bipolar disorder. Because the moodiness could be so harmful to personal relationships, financial status and job performance bipolar disorder is dealt with aggressively in most cases.

Manic Depression

Manic Depression or Bipolar Disorder is considered one of the most severe types of depression that people usually suffer from. Characterized by sudden and extreme changes in mood. Manic depression is called that because manic refers to ‘mania’, which refers to the ‘ups’ while depression refers to the ‘downs’. Bi-polar also refers to both ends of the spectrum of emotions

A lot of people experience erratic changes in their moods and, sometimes, these so-called mood swings are not just caused by PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) or stress. Doctors have diagnosed mood swings as a common symptom of depression, when these mood swings are severe. For example, if someone becomes annoyed because a shop does not have his favourite biscuits, it may just a sign of a spoilt childhood, but when getting annoyed means that person will shout and swear at the shop keeper, it may represent the onset of Manic Depression.

The ‘manic’ times or ‘ups’ in Manic Depression (or Bi-polar Disorder) are described as the times when a person who is suffering from Manic Depression experiences excessively high periods, exemplified by heightened energy, sudden outbursts of euphoric mood, extreme irritability, together with racing thoughts and aggressive behaviour. Therapists say that, someone suffering from Manic Depression may have these so-called manic ‘periods’ not just for a day or so, they can actually go on for a week or more.

During the ‘low’ or ‘down’ periods, people suffering from Manic Depression may experience very similar symptoms to those who are suffering from ‘normal’ depression. People who are suffering from Manic Depression experience periods of a depressed state of mind – including feelings of lack of self worth and being unloved.

There are various other symptoms as well: irrational guilt, severe sadness, anxiety attacks, feeling of not belonging, extreme gloom and an obvious loss of pleasure. According to therapists, an individual who is depressed continuously for more than a week can officially be diagnosed as someone who is suffering from Manic Depression.

In spite of it being one of the most common and acute kinds of depressive disorder, Manic Depression can be successfully treated, according to doctors. There’s no reason to worry too much about having it. You just need to follow the procedures that the therapist tells you and take the prescribed medicine in the correct dosage in order to help you (or your friend or love one) overcome Manic Depression before it becomes a dangerous risk to the sufferer’s life by suicide.

Also, people who suffer from Manic Depression should visit their therapists on a regular basis, in order to be able to get rid of their pent-up emotions to someone who is able understand just what it is they are going through a lot better than an untrained person.

Although positive results for Manic Depression can be achieved from natural alternatives, a much more lasting relief from the symptoms of Manic Depressive can best be achieved through consultation with a cognitive behaviour therapist. Contrary to some beliefs, when it comes to psychiatric treatments, psychiatrists, preferably those specializing in cognitive behaviour therapy, are still the best ones to visit for a permanent cure for Manic Depression.
