An Update On The Suunto Core Altimeter Watch
The Suunto Vector has long been the solid, reliable watch in the Suunto altimeter watch line. While the Vector has a great reputation, it is ten years old and Suunto was looking to replace it with a new generation of watch. The Suunto Core came out in 2007 as the “next” big thing in the Suunto watch family. The Suunto Core promised a full feature set, including an altimeter, barometer, storm warning function, and compass.
When the Suunto Core first came out, industry experts and everyday altimeter watch users were excited about it’s breakthrough technology. Features like the storm warning, the improved aesthetics, and large screen were welcome additions to the typically mundane altimeter watch. These additional features were set to take the Suunto Core from a piece of gear to a more wearable everyday watch.
Early in 2007, Suunto released the Core. Early adopters initially came back with rave reviews…then after a few months the complaints started coming in consistently. A large number of early adopters were experiencing battery failure, bezel and band breakage, and software malfunctions. The obvious conclusion to a bystander is that Suunto had not done rigorous enough product testing. Note that we are not saying they did or did not, just that the appearance was one of incompleteness with regards to their normally high product quality.
One thing that separates a leader is the ability to recognize problems and solve them. As THE market leader in the altimeter watch field, Suunto recognized the brilliance of the Suunto Core and that executed correctly, it could be the best altimeter watch for any outdoor activity. To their credit, Suunto spent a small fortune fixing the underlying issues with the Core and also repairing existing watches.
What was at first a small disaster has been remedied into a smashing success for the altimeter watch industry. The majority of the Suunto Core issues have been solved and now as a consumer, you can be nearly certain you are buying a fault free watch that will last a long time. The Core has a price point of $250 to $500 and can be found in 8 versions.
